Fuel Storage Tank Systems Program
The Environmental Services Department was established in February 1995, when FNESS was given management responsibility for the Fuel Storage Tank Removal and Replacement Program from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC). That program commenced with the objective of removal and replacement of band owned fuel tank storage systems in First Nations communities on B.C. The program is ongoing and continues to provide support to First Nations in reducing the risks to human health and the environment by upgrading facilities and management procedures to meet current environmental and engineering standards and regulation.
What we do:
• Facilitate the delivery of the program by instructing and managing service providers (consultants and contractors) on behalf of First Nations;
• Provide administrative and community liaison services for works to remove underground storage tank systems and replace with above ground storage tank systems;
• Liaise with First Nations to co-ordinate works and promote use of First Nations resources in delivery of the works;
• Facilitate compliance with Environment Canada Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulations;
• Provide training on fuel handling, fuel system operation and emergency spill response; and,
• Provide reference information and educational support to First Nations on good environmental practice and regulations.
Solid Waste Management
FNESS' solid waste management programs have assisted BC First Nations in identifying and implementing preferred options for the long-term management of their solid waste. Community participation and decision-making at all stages of the work are an integral part of the program. FNESS’ most successful solid waste management projects have all relied on the direct support and involvement of the community.
Other Programs
National Satellite Initiative: FNESS plays a key role in the development and delivery of broadband satellite infrastructure and services to 21 remote First Nation communities.
Student Placements: Within the FNESS team represents a valuable learning opportunity for the development of First Nations students interested in the environmental management field.
Climate Change Awareness: FNESS has delivered educational programs to increase the awareness in First Nations communities about Climate Change issues and the potential use of renewable energy sources and energy efficient options.
