Firefighter Exterior Operations Course in Zeballos

Dec 19, 2024

In October, FNESS Fire Services Officers Kathy Ferguson and Chris Buie conducted the Firefighter Exterior Operations course for the Zeballos Volunteer Fire Department. A total of 14 students participated, with 12 successfully completing the entire course. Moving forward, we will continue to offer additional training, including driver pump operating courses, as well as other support to help strengthen the community’s firefighting capabilities.

The Exterior Operations course that FNESS provides to First Nation communities with active fire departments, was developed by FNESS staff in-house and aligns with the minimum training standards set by the Office of the Fire Commissioner for the Province of BC. Our 8-day course covers both theory and practical hands-on training sessions of 14 modules and was specifically built for instruction for our Indigenous communities utilizing their own fire department equipment and apparatus.

Subjects include Firefighter Safety, Personal Protective Equipment and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Ropes and Knots, Ground Ladders, Building Construction and Fire Behaviour, Forcible Entry and Ventilation, Incident Command and Hazmat Awareness, Water Supply, Hose Lines, Nozzles, Appliances, Fire Streams, Fire Attack and Extinguishment, and then some tactical scenarios for some great experience.

The importance of this instruction can’t be overemphasized as it will ensure that our firefighters are trained to conduct structural fire suppression safely and in a competent manner. It gives them pride and ownership of their fire department and knowing that they are trained and properly equipped gives them security and knowledge on how to deal with fire emergencies in their community.
