Building Pathways Through Mentorship and Persistence
FNESS is marking an important milestone in the First Nations Firefighter Development Program, an initiative designed to support First Nations individuals pursuing careers in firefighting.
Launched in 2023, the program was created to help participants navigate the path into the fire service by providing mentorship, training support, and access to opportunities that can often be difficult to reach without guidance.
Joseph Currie, the program’s first mentee, has successfully graduated from Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) recruit training and is now a full-time career firefighter.
Over the course of 18 months, Joseph committed to intensive preparation, including completing multiple training courses, maintaining a rigorous physical training routine, and actively contributing to youth programs and firefighter competitions. His dedication and consistency throughout the process reflect both the demands of the profession and the level of commitment required to succeed.
His achievement represents a significant milestone not only for himself, but for the program as a whole. It demonstrates what is possible when the right supports are in place and highlights the importance of creating clear, supported pathways into firefighting for Indigenous participants.
As the program continues to grow, it aims to build on this momentum, supporting future candidates and strengthening Indigenous representation within fire services across the region.
