Strengthening Wildfire Readiness: Outdoor S-100A Training with Westbank First Nation and Ntityix Resources LP

Jul 23, 2025

This spring, the FNESS Wildfire Division travelled to Westbank First Nation (WFN) to deliver a fully outdoor S-100A (Annual Wildfire Safety Refresher) course. Organized with Ntityix Resources LP and West Bank First Nation, the training proved as impactful as it was engaging.

Held over two days with two separate groups, the sessions brought together a wide range of forestry workers from different backgrounds, roles, and skill levels. From seasoned operators to individuals still building their wildfire expertise, the diversity of experience created a rich learning environment where everyone brought something valuable to the table. The outdoor setting, amid the very landscapes these workers know and protect, added a powerful layer of authenticity and relevance that’s hard to replicate in a classroom.

By taking the training entirely outside, we were able to maximize hands-on learning, run realistic simulations, and move freely between practical stations. Topics like Fireline safety, pump and hose setup, forest fuels, and entrapment avoidance were all covered with a boots-on-the-ground approach. The energy was high, and the participants were fully engaged. Many commented that they appreciated the tactile, field-based learning and how it mirrored the real-world conditions they’d be working in.

WFN’s ongoing commitment to wildfire preparedness was evident throughout, and the support from Ntityix Resources LP was instrumental in making this training possible. Their coordination and hospitality made everything run seamlessly. It was clear how much value is placed on empowering the community and ensuring they’re ready for the fire season.

It’s also worth highlighting the broader impact of sessions like this: they don’t just check a box. They build capacity, empower individuals, and strengthen local wildfire response from the ground up. For many, the S-100A wasn’t just a refresher; it was a powerful reminder of how important this work is and how deeply we’re all connected to the land and each other.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to support Westbank First Nation and Ntityix Resources LP, and we look forward to more outdoor-focused, community-driven training sessions in the seasons ahead.

The Wildfire Division remains committed to actively engaging with communities to ensure their readiness and resilience against wildfires. One of our primary objectives is to deliver essential training and skills development that meets or exceeds the British Columbia Wildfire Service’s (BCWS) standards for Type 2 contractors’ wildland firefighting crews.

This vital training program, funded by BCWS, plays a crucial role in helping communities prepare for the 2025 fire season. It not only equips participants with the skills necessary to serve as contractors within BC but also strengthens community preparedness for wildfire season.
