On July 10, members of Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc’s FireSmart team, including their FireSmart Coordinator, newly hired Youth FireSmart Ambassador, and representatives from their FireSmart Canada Recognized Neighbourhood, took part in hands-on FireSmart Assessment training led by FNESS. Unlike the virtual Local FireSmart Representative (LFR) course, this in-person session offered practical, real-world experience that built confidence and capacity for conducting home assessments independently.
This spring, the neighbourhood took proactive steps by renting a chipper and removing thousands of pounds of wildfire fuel. This kind of effort is especially impactful in a high-risk, one-way-in, one-way-out area surrounded by dense coniferous forest.
With new LFRs now trained and confident, and the FireSmart Coordinator and the Youth FireSmart Ambassador already certified as a Wildfire Mitigation Specialists, the community’s ability to assess and mitigate wildfire risk has significantly grown. Their FireSmart program is well-positioned to continue thriving.
