We are excited to announce that First Nations’ Emergency Services Society (FNESS), in partnership with the University of British Columbia, Okanagan (UBCO), has been awarded $2.3 million in funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Wildfire Resilient Futures Initiative. This funding will support a three-year project to enhance Indigenous Fire Stewardship by integrating Indigenous knowledge, 150 fire-risk sensors, and AI predictive models developed by UBCO researchers. The initiative aims to forecast wildfire risk, map community values and infrastructure, and develop Integrated Fire Management frameworks to bolster wildfire resilience within First Nation communities in British Columbia.

“The support from Natural Resources Canada is a game-changer. This funding allows UBCO and FNESS to work collaboratively with First Nations communities on holistic fire mitigation. By combining Indigenous knowledge with new technology, we’re helping predict wildfire risk while respecting and integrating traditional fire practices. This initiative is about empowering communities to protect their land and their people”
Matt Nelson, Integrated Fire Management Supervisor, FNESS
